A: A few years ago, a study found that women who douched had almost twice the risk of ovarian cancer as women who did not douche, but the study was small, and it did not account for several factors that may influence ovarian cancer risk.
Previously, experts reported that the risk for an HPV infection was linked to numerous characteristics, such as age, ethnicity, education, marital status, cigarette smoking, numbers of s3xual partners, use of other feminine hygiene products and having vaginal problems, in addition to douching in the past six months, and how often a woman douched.
Statistically significant relationship was determined between the vaginal douching behaviour and couples who had low educationand low income levels, having unplanned pregnancy and had someone in their neighbourhood who douched (pless than 0.05 each).
(7) More than half of the women in the study were overweight or obese, and many of the women said they hadn't douched at all in the past 6 months.
But despite longstanding warnings over douching, nearly half the women surveyed in one 2008-2010 study had douched in the past month.
Among women who douched af-ter intercourse, vaginal infection was 1.84 times more frequent than among women who did not douche after intercourse (1.09-3.07, p less than0.05) (Table-II).
Females in the intervention group reported a reduction in douching compared with those in the control group: Over the 12-month follow-up period, women in the intervention douched 56% less often than controls.
FOR centuries women have douched believing this will make them healthier but the opposite is often true.
