Flat

A box about a foot wide, two feet long, and two inches deep filled with soil. Garden seeds were planted in it, and later the young plants were transplanted to the garden or a Cold frame. By the end of the twentieth century, a flat usually meant a shallow, flat box holding many small individual containers of plants.
