John Barrowman provided lots of camp fun as the immortal Capt Jack Harkness, while Eve Myles gave good "fiesty female side-kick" - but it wasn't until the gritty 2009 five-parter Children of Earth that the series graduated from its early Blake's 7-style hokiness.

Ted hates the beginning of Eucharistic Prayer C, the Star Trek prayer: "At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home." I kind of like it, despite the hokiness, but it's comical to see him look disapprovingly across the choir at Jaman, who in turn darts meaningful looks around until half the choir is in on the joke.

But perhaps, despite its hokiness, our friend in the band's one-liner highlights the dilemma facing Prague itself.

Even when the blood-and-thunder hokiness of the over-the-top plot tilts perilously close to absurdity, the admirably straight-faced performances by well-cast lead players provide just enough counterbalance to sustain aud curiosity and sympathy.

Heck, there is not a bum note - even the homespun hokiness of Oh Bury Me Not works.
