I've shot a lot of game with my favorite .300, ranging from 40-pound steenbok to 1,200-pound moose and rarely do properly hit animals go farther than a step or two.

According to the report on hunting concessions in The Namibian: The species to be hunted include elephant, leopard, roan, spotted hyaena, blue wildebeest, duiker, steenbok, buffalo, hippopotamus, crocodile, sable, lechwe, eland, giraffe, Hartman zebra, kudu, impala, eland, warthog, oryx, and klipspringer.

Bovid of very small size, close to that of Steenbok (Raphicerus campestris).

I've also used the .17 HMR in Africa for small predators and pygmy antelopes, and I've found it marginal for jackal (which, like coyotes, are very tough); and I've seen issues with penetration even on small, thin-skinned antelopes like steenbok. But add 1,000 fps to that little .17-caliber bullet and you have an entirely different cartridge with an altogether different set of capabilities.

While safaris revolve around obvious sexy species, don't discount "lesser" animals such as blesbok, steenbok and duikers, springbok, bushbuck, impala and reedbuck, just to name a few.
