(tŏn′səlz)
The two oval-shaped tissues at the back of the throat in mammals that lie between the mouth and the pharynx. The tonsils are thought to prevent infections of the breathing passages but often become infected themselves. ♦ Inflammation of the tonsils is called tonsillitis (tŏn′sə-lī′tĭs). ♦ Surgical removal of the tonsils is called a tonsillectomy (tŏn′sə-lĕk′tə-mē).
