(nē′groid′)adj.
Of or being a human racial classification traditionally distinguished by physical characteristics such as brown to black skin and often tightly curled hair and including peoples indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa. No longer in scientific use.
Ne′groid′ n.
Usage Note: The word Negroid was coined as a racial categorization in the 1800s. Negroid, Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and other -oid words, once widely used in anthropology, are now rarely used scientifically. The general nonscientific use of these words is often considered offensive and should be avoided.
