Official Scrabble Rules - Complete Guide

Game Setup

Scrabble is played by 2-4 players. Each player draws seven tiles from the tile bag at the start of the game. The player who draws a letter closest to "A" goes first (blanks count as coming before "A"). Players alternate turns in clockwise order. For help with word finding during gameplay, you can use scrabble rules tools to verify valid words.

The Scrabble Board

The Scrabble board is a 15x15 grid with 225 squares total. The center square (H8) is marked with a star and is a double word score square. Understanding scrabble rules helps you make the most of premium squares. The board contains several types of premium squares:

  • Double Letter Score (DL) - Light blue squares that double the value of a single letter
  • Triple Letter Score (TL) - Dark blue squares that triple the value of a single letter
  • Double Word Score (DW) - Light red/pink squares that double the value of the entire word
  • Triple Word Score (TW) - Dark red squares that triple the value of the entire word

Tile Distribution and Values

There are 100 tiles in the standard Scrabble set:

  • 2 blank tiles (0 points, can represent any letter)
  • 1 point: A (9), E (12), I (9), O (8), U (4), R (6), N (6), T (6), L (4), S (4)
  • 2 points: D (4), G (3)
  • 3 points: B (2), C (2), M (2), P (2)
  • 4 points: F (2), H (2), V (2), W (2), Y (2)
  • 5 points: K (1)
  • 8 points: J (1), X (1)
  • 10 points: Q (1), Z (1)

How to Play - The First Word

The first player must place a word on the board that covers the center square (H8). This word can be placed horizontally or vertically, but at least one tile must be on the center star square. The first word scores double because it uses the center double word score square. Using scrabble rules resources can help you find the best opening word.

Subsequent Turns

After the first word, players take turns forming new words by placing tiles on the board. Each new word must:

  • Use at least one tile already on the board
  • Form a complete word reading left to right (horizontally) or top to bottom (vertically)
  • All tiles placed must form complete words (no incomplete words)
  • All words formed must be valid according to the official dictionary

Word Formation Rules

When placing tiles, you can:

  • Extend a word: Add letters to the beginning or end of an existing word
  • Form parallel words: Place tiles adjacent to existing words to form new words perpendicular to them
  • Hook words: Add letters to form new words using existing tiles

All words formed in a single turn must be valid. If you form multiple words, you score points for all of them.

Scoring Rules

Scoring is calculated as follows:

  1. Add up the point values of all letters in the word(s) formed
  2. Apply letter score multipliers (double/triple letter score) to individual letters
  3. Apply word score multipliers (double/triple word score) to the total word value
  4. If a word covers multiple premium squares, apply multipliers in order: letter multipliers first, then word multipliers
  5. If you use all 7 tiles in one turn (called a "bingo" or "bonus"), add 50 bonus points

Important: Premium squares can only be used once. Once a tile is placed on a premium square, that square's bonus applies only to that turn. Future words using tiles on premium squares do not receive the bonus again.

Blank Tiles

Blank tiles can represent any letter. When you place a blank tile, you must declare which letter it represents, and it remains that letter for the rest of the game. Blank tiles are worth 0 points and cannot be used on premium letter score squares to multiply their value (they're still worth 0).

Challenging Words

If a player believes an opponent has played an invalid word, they can challenge it before the next player's turn begins. Understanding scrabble rules about challenges is important. The rules for challenges vary:

  • If the word is invalid: The player who played it must remove their tiles, loses their turn, and receives 0 points
  • If the word is valid: The challenger loses their next turn

Some versions use a "challenge penalty" where the challenger loses points if wrong. Check your local rules or tournament rules for specific challenge procedures.

Exchanging Tiles

Instead of playing a word, a player may exchange one or more tiles. To exchange tiles:

  1. Place the tiles you want to exchange face down
  2. Draw the same number of tiles from the bag
  3. Return the exchanged tiles to the bag
  4. Your turn ends (you score 0 points)

You cannot exchange tiles if there are fewer than 7 tiles remaining in the bag. For more detailed information about all scrabble rules, consult the official rulebook or use online resources.

Passing Your Turn

A player may pass their turn instead of playing a word or exchanging tiles. They score 0 points and play continues to the next player. If all players pass consecutively, the game ends.

Ending the Game

The game ends when:

  • One player uses all their tiles and there are no tiles left in the bag, OR
  • All players pass consecutively (no one can or wants to make a play)

Final Scoring

When the game ends, final scores are calculated:

  1. Each player's remaining tiles are subtracted from their score
  2. If one player used all their tiles (went out), add the sum of all opponents' remaining tiles to that player's score
  3. The player with the highest final score wins

Valid Words

Words must be found in the official Scrabble dictionary being used. Common dictionaries include:

  • North America: Official Tournament and Club Word List (TWL) or NASPA Word List
  • UK/International: Collins Scrabble Words (CSW) or SOWPODS

Proper nouns, abbreviations, prefixes, suffixes standing alone, words requiring hyphens or apostrophes, and words requiring capitalization are NOT allowed. Only standard dictionary words are valid.

Important Rules Summary

  • All words must be at least 2 letters long
  • Words must read left-to-right or top-to-bottom
  • All tiles placed in a turn must be in a straight line
  • You cannot play diagonally
  • You cannot rearrange tiles already on the board
  • You must draw tiles to refill your rack to 7 tiles after each turn (if tiles remain in the bag)
  • Premium squares only apply to the turn in which they are first used
  • If you form multiple words in one turn, you score all of them

Strategy Tips

While not official rules, here are some strategic considerations:

  • Save high-value letters (Q, Z, J, X) for premium squares or bonus plays
  • Try to use all 7 tiles for the 50-point bonus
  • Balance your rack with vowels and consonants
  • Block opponents from accessing premium squares
  • Learn two-letter words - they're essential for parallel plays

These are the official rules for standard Scrabble gameplay. Tournament play may have additional rules regarding time limits, challenges, and dictionary usage. Always agree on which dictionary and rule variations you'll use before starting a game.
